Wayanad Relief Camp – Balajyothi Intervention
The ESAF Foundation team visited several camps affected by the Mundakai and Chooralmala landslides, including G.L.P School Meppadi, G.H.S.S Meppadi, C.M.S Higher Secondary School Arapatta, WMO Arts and Science College Muttil, G.H.S School Rippon, De Paul Public School Kalpatta, and S.K.M.J Kalpatta. The primary objective of the team was to provide psychosocial first aid, concentrating on the emotional and psychological well-being of the affected individuals, especially children. These activities were conducted as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of the ESAF Small Finance Bank (ESAF SFB).
To address their unique needs, the team implemented various care programs and activities on individual, group, and family levels. These initiatives aimed to create a comfortable and supportive environment, featuring activities and games designed to promote learning, habit development, and emotional healing. Additionally, the team placed a strong emphasis on developing reading skills by organizing activities that fostered a love for reading among children.
The ESAF Foundation team sought to provide holistic support to the landslide-affected community through a variety of activities, including ball passing, painting, individual games, reading, writing, yoga, dance, singing, and storytelling. Each activity was tailored to enhance the children’s cognitive, physical, and creative skills. For instance:
- Physical Activities: Activities like ball passing and individual games were conducted to improve motor skills and teamwork. These activities are crucial as they promote physical health and teach the value of cooperation and fair play.
- Artistic Expression: Painting sessions allowed children to express their creativity and emotions through colours and brushstrokes, fostering their artistic abilities.
- Literacy Development: Reading and writing sessions were emphasized for their importance in improving literacy and communication skills. Through these activities, children expanded their vocabulary, improved their writing abilities, and immersed themselves in the world of books, opening new horizons of knowledge and imagination.
- Mindfulness and Fitness: Yoga sessions were introduced to help children develop mindfulness, improve concentration, and maintain physical fitness.
- Performance Arts: Dance and singing opportunities provided platforms for children to express themselves freely, boosting their confidence and sense of rhythm.
- Imaginative Learning: Storytelling sessions allowed children to dive into the world of imagination while learning valuable life lessons. These stories not only entertained but also imparted moral values, encouraging critical and empathetic thinking.
In addition to these activities, the children also participated in Independence Day celebrations, which were memorable for everyone involved. Marked by patriotic fervor, the celebrations saw children participating in various programs that instilled a sense of national pride and unity. These activities were conducted across several schools, including G.H.S.S Meppadi, G.L.P.S Meppadi, S.K.M.J Kalpatta, and C.M.S Arapatta, each of which added its unique touch to the programs, ensuring every child had the opportunity to participate and enjoy.
